The sketch is the capturing of the essentials of a subject without details. The phrase "quick sketch" has come to be synonymous with a drawing done quickly to capture the action or gesture. However, what are essentials to one artist may not be to another, and thus the meaning of the sketch is in the intention of the artist. The famous 18th century English artist Hogarth made a comment about Michelangelo that he never sketched haphazardly, for every line had a meaning.
